Considered Both Products
Epic
Chose Epic
Epic gives extensive customization options in terms of utility and view. I have found this to be highly useful and efficient EHR as compared to other EHRs we use in our organization.
Chose Epic
Epic has more features and seems to be used by most hospital systems, which means information can be shared between systems. It is not compatible with Cerner, McKesson, or any other of the less commonly used products and we cannot view information from such facilities. I …
Chose Epic
Epic has extensive features, options, customization and is truly a robust EMR software. As a user I can tell there has been much thought and effort into creating this software and they are constantly updating the technology to keep it user friendly. Epic can do more than any …
Chose Epic
All of the EHR's I have worked with are strong in their own right, however, Epic really shines in an Enterprise level situation. Most EHR's are specific to one context, like hospital, lab, or clinic. Epic has a great deal of strength in unifying all of these different contexts …
NextGen Healthcare EHR
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
It is highly customizable, which is very useful for a multi-specialty physician's office.

Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
NextGen is ok. It is not, nor will it ever be, EPIC. I have seen strides from Cerner since the Oracle acquisition, which will certainly give Nextgen a run for its status quo attitude. ECW is still very popular in the FQHC world. I have worked with NextGen software for many …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Raintree was significantly faster and extremely customizable. The primary reason we left Raintree was because it was time consuming to customizations and whenever there was a system update, in order to accept those updates, we had to re-do all of the customizations. If it …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
The Meditech solution I used was a green screen product, so NextGen is a vast improvement over that (Meditech may have improved by now). The Horizon and McKesson EMRs that I used may not be correctly identified above, but my experience is that all EMRs provide the same basic …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
NextGen Healthcare EHR was our first system.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Never used another product. Our company has been using NextGen Healthcare EHR for over 10 years.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
We are moving away from NextGen Healthcare EHR to Epic this year.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
NG is like no other software I have ever used. I thought if you used one software they are all alike. Not this software, it is totally different but let me tell you very thorough and it also can track anything that anyone has done in a work day. Good auditing system.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Cerner seems to be more for inpatient care and NextGen is much easier to navigate throughout.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Affordability for good quality.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
NextGen Healthcare Clinical Care Solutions won our practice because of its ability to do it all. It encompasses all parts of our practice while accommodating the patients' needs. Other solutions we looked for did not offer the amount of support and products that NextGen …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
The account executive team made all the difference for us.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
I feel like with NextGen we have a well-rounded amount of things that we can do. When we train new hires on how to use this system, it helps that the system is very user-friendly and simple enough to for those to catch on without extensive amounts of training.
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Better customization, equal support (poor), better reporting (much better)
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
MediTouch EHR had a better back-end support thank eClinicalWorks (eCW) when we asked for high availability of the application to both vendors. MediTouch EHR was able to provided their downtime statistics of the last three years along with where their current host facilities are …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
NextGen Healthcare EHR is much faster and more reliable than IMS. We no longer have constant issues with the system being down during clinic. It is also much easier to navigate and for new employees to learn. We did not have training options or knowledge base available in the …
Chose NextGen Healthcare EHR
Ability to customize and set up external APIs and Interfaces.

Epic is very good on the medical side and continues improving mental health and dental care. Having integrated telehealth via Zoom was a game-changer. During COVID, it was vital to have telehealth options and to ensure it was completely HIPAA Compliant and easy to document inside their health record.

For Primary Care and Behavioral Health Providers in the outpatient setting, NextGen Healthcare EHR is the leading solution because of its ease of use, setup, and workflow customization. Pros
  • Updated technology. Epic consistently stays up to date and advances their technology and features.
  • Shortcuts, templates, and smart phrases help to make using the software easier and faster with accuracy.
  • Intuitive user interface. Epic has put a lot of thought into the design and function of the software and has ensured that it is user friendly.

  • NextGen has always stayed on top of the many changes every year and remained certified. I have seen many EHR companies go out of business or seen users have to change EHR systems in order to remain compliant for reporting.
  • With NextGen, I am able to make a few customizations that my providers ask for to make their documentation easier. Not all EHR's are customizable. While it is not best practice to do a lot of customizations, sometimes it is worth the extra work to keep your providers happy!
  • I love going to the NextGen User Group Meeting they have every year. I always learn things I didn't know and learn more about the things I do. They offer classes for everyone no matter what you do that pertains to NextGen. Even Government updates for healthcare.

Cons
  • Difficult to find what you need.
  • Almost impossible to correct mistakes.
  • Multiple screens must be navigated to get to what you want.

  • NextGen completely misses the mark for ASCs, especially multispecialty.
  • NextGen EHR constantly struggles with UDS reporting based on the EHR documentation.
  • NextGen EHR struggles to compete because of automation. Most practices want to be dexterous, but it's not sustainable as we look to AI and automation.

Usability
My organization has been using the Epic platform for 10 years and counting! Epic has continuously improved and updated the system to align with current best practices and meet the needs of members and their patients. As an FQHC, we provide medical, dental, and mental health services, and it is essential to have access to all the patients' health information in one place. Integrating Care Everywhere and Telehealth options embedded directly in the EHR has greatly improved our ability to take the best care of each patient who walks through our doors.

The usability of the product is great. The difficulty that we have is in the background with the speed of servers or of things loading. If there are any issues with the remote server, things can really slow down drastically.

Pages load quickly and reports are uploaded quickly. It just takes far too many clicks to get anything complete in this program. If a patient wants to pay for something after we have checked them out of their appointment, or wants to make an appointment it is not efficient. In a busy practice like ours efficiency is key and we need to keep the flow going

Support Rating
A dedicated support staff for each module/area is provided by Epic. This is beneficial for points of contact, however, not all support staff are created equal, and there seems to be high turnover in these roles(staff seems to turn over every 1-2 years). This can make it challenging for continuity and quick support resolution as new staff are not as familiar with organization-specific needs, environments, and/or questions.

Tier 1 support is useless. They gather details we've already provided and have no idea how to help us. Techs just call rather than scheduling an appointment which means we are in the middle of something else and our internal IT is unavailable to provide appropriate connection. Webex details aren't provided in advance of the call so it's difficult to get connected timely to have a conversation in real time during the support session. Many issues drag on for months and tickets get closed without resolution. It's a "known issue" is the most unhelpful response to a recurring problem. UGM Learning Lab is perfect because the issues based experts are there! It would be ideal to always be connected like that in real time

Alternatives Considered
Epic has more features and seems to be used by most hospital systems, which means information can be shared between systems. It is not compatible with Cerner, McKesson, or any other of the less commonly used products and we cannot view information from such facilities. I believe Epic has the most features. It automatically saves entries, unlike Quadrimed, for example, which does not save and if you accidentally get logged out you lose your information.

Return on Investment
  • Improved Customer Satisfaction: After the initial implementation phase, I have seen increases in patient satisfaction. This is due to the increased transparency regarding their care as well as an increase in paid claims.
  • Increased Revenue: In some cases I have seen Medicare denial rates drop from high 80's and 90's down to single digits. I have seen incredible jumps in the time payment is received from an approved claim.
