What is NextGen Healthcare EHR?

NextGen Healthcare provides ambulatory practices of all size solutions along with dedicated support and professional services. NextGen® Enterprise EHR offers practices configurable clinical content, workflows, and an integrated patient experience platform that incorporates telehealth. With NextGen® Mobile, providers’ smartphones become an extension of the EHR, saving time. NextGen has its own fully integrated solutions that provide dictation, speech-to-text, direct to desktop and Ambient Listening AI technology. NextGen Mobile Pro provides these capabilities, replacing their need for additional integrated solutions. Managed cloud hosting keeps practices secure and makes upgrades easier, though on-premise options are also available.

NextGen® Enterprise PM supports patient registration and scheduling, eligibility verification, and pre-service financial clearance. It also provides rules-based charge creation, claims scrubbing and processing, and supports A/R management and collections and reporting.

Through integrating an EHR and PM system, the software helps to enhance patient engagement, better manage the practice's revenue cycle, optimize the management of its patient population, and expand communication with other healthcare organizations.

NextGen® Office is a cloud-based EHR designed to support practice growth, save staff time, and increase patient volume. The integrated clinical and billing platform features specialty-specific EHR content, mobile accessibility, a revenue cycle management system, and a patient portal.

Through the portal, patients can manage their care as they are enabled to go online to schedule appointments, request refills, schedule virtual visits, and connect with their providers.

NextGen Healthcare Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NextGen Healthcare EHR to manage all of our patient care. We schedule appointments, chart patient encounters, manage medical records and send all claims through the software. This software makes viewing patient records, including balances and payments very easy and new staff is able to learn the system quickly. It is helpful to be able to use the training available through the system when we are training staff.

Pros

  • The inter office messages are easy to send and view
  • Claim history on the practice management side is easy to view and it is easy to print the HCFA
  • The knowledge base is helpful as is the training page for new employees

Cons

  • It is difficult to add documents to patient charts from the fax inbox because the documents cannot be read easily without opening them at which point you cannot access the screen to attach the document to a chart
  • It is inconvenient that only one user at a time can be working in a SOAP note
  • It is difficult to set up a report for patient payments that separates the payments made by cash, check or charge

Return on Investment

  • The automated appointment reminders have significantly reduced the number of missed appointments and save hours of staff time now that they no longer have to make reminder calls. This in turn saves the practice time and money.
  • The payment screen allows staff to easily see if the patient has a copay or balance when checking out so payments on account have increased.
  • ePrescribe is much more reliable than it was with our previous system

A solid customizable system.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our entire clinic runs on NextGen Healthcare EHR. Business office, nurse and physician documentation, infusion documentation, patient portal, analytics. We have 12 specialty physicians in our practice who use this software on a daily basis. We use several plugins such as Luma, Instamed, NextGen Share, and we have interfaces between NextGen and our lab and radiology software.

Pros

  • Templates and documents are pretty easy to customize to meet our needs
  • Pre-visit insurance verification

Cons

  • PXP patient portal has been very buggy with a lot of downtime
  • Reporting tools can't always pull the data we're looking for
  • Support can be slow to respond at times.

Return on Investment

  • Copy forward and my phrases save the doctors and staff a lot of time
  • Background business processor allows us to automate tasks
  • Real time eligibility checking saves us time checking insurance coverage.

NextGen

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I work with practices and help find solutions for workflow, operations, and day-to-day obstacles. NextGen is a tool we help to document patient visits, prescribe RX, document referrals, schedule, and bill.

Pros

  • Identifies problems that exist in a department or workflow.
  • Perform routine functions and works well for GP and UC.
  • Scheduling and billing functions are pretty seamless.

Cons

  • NextGen completely misses the mark for ASCs, especially multispecialty.
  • NextGen EHR constantly struggles with UDS reporting based on the EHR documentation.
  • NextGen EHR struggles to compete because of automation. Most practices want to be dexterous, but it's not sustainable as we look to AI and automation.

Return on Investment

  • NextGen will not reduce staffing. It will redirect, but not reduce.
  • NextGen will identify previously hidden problems in workflows when implemented, which should increase revenue/efficiency.
  • NextGen can be complicated and require scribes for less tech-savvy providers, which costs a practice.
