7shifts is a restaurant workforce and scheduling management application, which also features collaboration features, from the Canadian company of the same name.

Pros

  • Lightweight, intuitive and pleasant user interface makes it a useful, reliable and enjoyable tool for all management and staff to use
  • Reliable and effective customer support to help address questions and issues that come up
  • Self-service onboard and implementation makes it easy to get platform set up at our multiple restaurant locations
  • Constantly innovating and responding to our evolving and complex needs
  • Effective and well-developed 3rd party integrations with POS (Toast) and HR/payroll solutions (ADP)

Cons

  • Greater training resource and documentation portal to expand labor management and staff training functionality
  • Ability to generate and request, submit forms as part of broadening capabilities with HR
  • More sales and labor analytics on the mobile app (vs. just on website)

Return on Investment

  • Simplify and streamline weekly payroll process by reducing the amount of time spent by managers to approve time punches.
  • Real-time visibility into revenue and labor cost enables our management teams to stay within labor cost targets.
  • Much better priced and more effective labor management platform relative to others on the market.

Affordable & Functional

Pros

  • Easy of scheduling: allows setup templates
  • Communication with staff: an employee directly or my department
  • Affordable: offers a lot of functions without being overly priced

Cons

  • iPhone app: I'm not able to change the preset time frames so I have to manually enter the shifts
  • When working from the app it doesn't block out the time off as it does on the desktop so I have to make sure I haven't approved anyone first before I start doing the schedule

Return on Investment

  • Doing the schedule from the iPhone app is not as simple as the desktop or iPad platform. I'd like to see it more streamlined.

Pros

  • Easy to use app interface, even for our non-techy staff.
  • Communication tools, like the messaging center.

Cons

  • When creating schedules I wish there was a way to remember the last schedule you were on instead of ordering them in alphabetical order.
  • When working on a schedule, again when you revisit it, it alphabetizes the employees instead of keeping them in the order you add them. This is pertinent for our business because we're reservation-based and work off of a rotating schedule where the lowest ones are called off if there are not enough reservations.

Return on Investment

  • 7Shifts has helped to reduce turnover, due to being able to hold staff more accountable.
  • It has also reduced HR costs due to some of the functionality (marking no shows, sick, being able to keep track), referencing past schedules, and keeping track of sent communication.

Pros

  • Shift swaps/giveaways.
  • Communication tools.

Cons

  • Submitting time off requests and availability could be a little more user-friendly. It works just fine as is, but is easy to make mistakes when entering dates.

Return on Investment

  • I have worked in the service industry before where we just had a phone directory and copy of the schedule posted on a cork board by the office. It was a nightmare! I would say 7shifts has made a major impact on ensuring proper coverage for different meal hours and special events. We do not run short staffed very often anymore.

7shifts keeps communication easy!

Pros

  • Staff can easily access fellow team members' contact info (phone & email).
  • Staff can easily enter availability or time off.
  • Managers have a log book to share issues or updates from the days’ shift so quick action can be completed easily if needed.
  • Being able to communicate with managers only, with a specific department, or with the entire staff easily is very helpful.

Cons

  • Sometimes notifications don’t clear when checked; or it’s hard to understand where in 7shifts the notification is coming from (log book, schedule, etc).
  • Would be nice to add photos to post.

Return on Investment

  • Streamlined communication for faster action when needed (fix broken items, etc).
  • Supports quality of life for staff as schedules are easily posted and viewed.
  • Supports quality of life for managers with a managers-only forum to communicate staff issues and handle in a timely manner from shift to shift.
