Best-in-Class Requirements Management tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The Engineering Team at my client was focused on developing the ability to demonstrate their engineering organization's ASPICE capabilities as they worked to improve their overall software quality. One of the necessary considerations was to have a Requirements Management tool that could support traceability. The use case focused primarily on software engineering and software development.

Pros

 • Easy to configure
 • Out of box capabilities
 • Incredible customer service
 • Incredible technical support
 • Powerful tool and add-ons
 • Goldilocks flexibility

Cons

 • Could add capability for Project Admin to upload image per project at highest level to make visually easier to identify one out of many
 • Could offer a 'free' version that can be used on only 1 project with limited functionality
 • Free version could also allow JCA to be trialed - what better way to get people hooked on how easy it is to use, than to offer a Free version. Get them hooked, then have them become a subscriber. Functionality would need to be very limited because of the power of the tool. Be sure tech support is aligned with these users - to demonstrate the incredible support Jama provides with a funded subscription. An easy way to bump off the competition!

Return on Investment

 • Positive impact teaching how to write good requirements
 • Positive impact learning how easy it is to do traceability
 • Positive impact learning how to document test plans and test outcomes
 • Positive impact with routings and approvals
 • Business objectives are still a work in progress to meet but company is well on its way to meeting those related to Jama

Jama Connect Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our organization uses Jama for requirements and risk management, as well as design verification and validation activities. Jama allows us to maintain traceability between system and subsystem requirements, test cases, and risk file line items. Having a single source of truth for our design history file content has been extremely valuable for future iterative new product development projects and scope assessments for design changes.

Pros

 • Revision control and revision history
 • Design requirement traceability
 • Test case management and execution

Cons

 • Report configuration requires knowledge of Velocity and the Jama API
 • Jama can be slow when handling large datasets
 • Better tools for creating and managing large numbers of relationships

Return on Investment

 • Streamlined design change management
 • Reduced rework burden from changes to requirements or traceability
 • Let time spent copying and pasting between documents
 • Fewer errors from incorrect item IDs in documents

An engaging tool to enable success within teams and organisations

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using Jama Connect to be more than just a requirements management tool - we are using Jama Connect as the single source of truth to contain not just the requirements, but the why and how the system is the way it is. My organisation has only just started on its journey to adopt systems engineering, so we are using Jama Connect to start that engagement with stakeholders from senior members of the organisation, to individual designers and engineers.

Pros

 • Simple, user-friendly interface
 • Web-based
 • Rich text information i.e. not just plain, unformatted text

Cons

 • In the relationship definition, it would be good to be able to manually sort the list
 • When in the Review perspective, you can only see "title", "desription" and "status" - it would be good to be able to tune what is visible
 • The basic exporting I find very difficult to get what you need, then Velocity is another step up in complexity (but also capability) a non-admin installer for an IDE to allow testing during development of a velocity script would be helpful.

Return on Investment

 • One experience that converted an engineer to using Jama Connect was an electronics engineer that was writing test plans. I showed them about how to write "unit" or very discrete tests and then showed them an automatic export to get the document. Thus the authoring of the document effort was taken away, they could focus on defining the test
 • Unfortunately I have very much struggled to embed systems engineering, requirements management and Jama Connect as part of the 'ways of working' outside the systems and electronics teams.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our entire company uses Jama Connect to document the following:

Risk Management File

User Needs

System Requirements

Software Requirements

Requirement Traceability

FMEA (use, software, and process)

Software Development Plan

Verification Plan and Report

Validation Plan and Report

We pretty much use it for the entire software development lifecycle and utilize its review/approval and baselining system for our controlled documents.

We also use it to send to our customers either via a direct Jama review or export to PDF/Microsoft Word.

We also use commenting feature within the review process to be able to edit on the spot per item per comment then publishing a new version of the document for baseline and review.

Pros

 • Requirement Tracing
 • Tracking review comments
 • Customization of set types
 • Customer service

Cons

 • Efficiency with loading the pages.
 • More white space in the UI. Breathability
 • Make Suspect identifiers more valuable

Return on Investment

 • FDA approvals are easy because of document export. Can export documents in a matter of seconds.
 • Viewing tracing to verification documents so easily reduced our planning time by 5x for identifying what tests are needed for regression.
