Mitel MiCollab - Can be great if you have proper support from hosted services!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We recently moved away from Mitel MiCollab, due to lack of support from local vendors for the product. We had utilized it from 2010-2022, and mostly supported it ourselves - internally. The problems we experienced currently - which lead to us choosing a different VOIP provider was lack of expertise from the phone companies "supporting" it for us. Our own technicians, seemingly, knew how to better manage the system than the company we were paying each month to do so.

Pros

  • Voicemail To Email
  • Creating custom buttons tied to specific user profiles
  • Hotdesking - allowing users to log in to phones district-wide.
  • Record an active call with just the push of a button
  • Teleworker phones - allowing phones to be programmed for off-site use with only a PoE injector/internet access needed.

Cons

  • Training of local providers needs a 100% overhaul. Our local providers didn't seem to know how to fix most issues we encountered - unless they called an off-site contact who was rarely available when needed.
  • Remove the need for local controllers (I have heard newer versions of this software have gone this way - but still require the end-user to host a VM on hardware they own)

Return on Investment

  • I think we wasted a lot of money on tech calls that we ended up mitigating ourselves. Our internal technicians taught themselves how to manage the software and controllers - so that we didn't have to rely on the phone company to do so - and take a week or two to respond when a need arose.
  • Having spare handsets on-hand made replacing them when a student broke them a breeze. Being able to copy user settings over to a new device was also quick and efficient
  • Record-a-call was a great feature that some of our staff would have to utilize when dealing with legal issues - so having proof of what was said on a call was great.

Perfect Fit for SMB Client who don't want to break the bank

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Mitel MiCollab 8 is a great fit for customers who already have an existing Mitel UC environment and can have a cost effective approach for collaboration for team members compared to all the added cost(s) that come with Microsoft Teams and all of their hidden costs depending on features that are needed.

Pros

  • soft client
  • collaboration
  • Instant Messaging
  • Voice over IP

Cons

  • Not as powerful at Microsoft Teams
  • Would be nice it it was Agnostic
  • Screen sharing could be better

Return on Investment

  • Great Collaboration Suite for existing Mitel Customers
  • Integrates great with existing Mitel devices
  • If greenfield customer, MS Teams much easier to implement for O365 users
  • Doesn't integrated to Microsoft Apps that well
  • GUI not as clean as MS Teams

This is a must have for any size company

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Everyone in the company uses it. Our school teachers, tech helpdesk, not, HR etc. It is essential to our daily tasks, especially for the service reps that deal with patients, schools, teachers and doctors every day. It'd easy to setup either the physical phone or computer client for everyone's needs

Pros

  • Calls
  • Queues
  • Vm
  • Features

Cons

  • Setup for non tech users
  • Easy
  • Relaible

Return on Investment

  • Better team coordinating
  • Better team transfers

Usability

MiCollab is okay internally, but not a Zoom or Teams competitor.

Pros

  • Hosted in-house conferencing.

Cons

  • The web interface [felt] archaic.
  • The requirement to use your own lines limits the number of call-ins.
  • The resources of the server limit the hosting capacity.
  • [In my experience] the licensing was a pain.

Return on Investment

  • [I felt] it was a waste of licensing dollars because we didn't use the product due to its difficulty and limitations.
  • It could provide ROI for small, Mitel-familiar teams vs paying for a different service.

Alternatives Considered

Zoom, GoToMeeting, TeamViewer Meeting (formerly Blizz) and Microsoft Teams

  • Straight forward settings

Cons

  • The swipe from left and right for menus on the iOS app is not intuitive for less tech savvy
  • Sometimes status gets stuck and you have to switch it multiple times
  • Wish it would not offer to call using your cell phone number

Return on Investment

  • Increased work ability during pandemic
  • Now vital part of our disaster recovery plan
  • Looking at this app to replace need to provide admin a dedicated cell phone
