Sage HR - Useful Tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Sage HR is used in our organization to facilitate leave management, expenses and project tracking along with announcements and organizational charts.

We were previously using Excel for all of the above and this lead to emails flying back and forth and a much less streamlined process compared to what we have now using Sage HR.

Pros

  • Leave management process
  • Expenses
  • Survey creation

Cons

  • Home screen customisation
  • Support function
  • Search function

Return on Investment

  • Time saving for managers
  • Process support for employees
  • Collective reporting

Sage HR

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Sage HR for distributing payslips and allocating holidays. Using Sage HR makes the holiday booking process so easy and avoids any overlap between staff. Being a small business it saves time with everything being in one place allowing me to concentrate on the other aspects of my job.

Pros

  • Easy to navigate
  • Great for staff to use for Holidays and Payslips

Cons

  • Be able to see all staff on a calendar at once
  • Time keeping

Usability

Problems and no Support

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SageHR for Time Tracking, Time and Attendance and Performance Management.

Pros

  • The mobile app is decent.
  • Quick Feedback is good.

Cons

  • Time Off policies are confusing to setup and don't work as expected. We've particularly had issues with long-term leave interacting incorrectly with accrued PTO - such that employees on long-term leave had their PTO automatically adjusted incorrectly and we had to resort to complicated manual calculations to determine the correct amount. When we reached out for support around this we never got an answer as to why the system had done the automated adjustment it had done and no advice on how to prevent it from happening again in the future, despite multiple efforts to follow up with them.
  • Performance Reviews are confusing, with many different components housed in different areas but all controlled by the same configuration settings. On the dashboard the Self-Reviews and Peer Reviews look almost exactly the same and HR is constantly having to retrain and help users to complete their reviews.
  • Their support is basically non-existent. Support staff will reply to chat or email, but don't offer any assistance beyond restating what is in the help documentation, which isn't helpful. When real issues arise, such as a system glitch that wiped out the vacation accrual for all staff, they just respond that 'engineering will look into it' without communicating an ETA, or explaining what the problem is.

Return on Investment

  • In some ways it is better than documents and spreadsheets, but more frustrating when it doesn't work and no support is available.

My thoughts on CakeHR

Pros

  • Time off policies are clear and transparent.
  • The review process functionality was extremely easy to use.
  • Support is outstanding . If you ever run into an issue they are always available to help.
  • Onboarding document control is really easy to manage and stays consistent with a growing company.

Cons

  • A few more override features for time off. For example, I would like certain people to get notified of PTO. CakeHR can't do this currently. So I had to grant authority to approve, which gave my admin the ability to see the email of approval.

Return on Investment

  • In 2019, we found a few missing time off requests that were not updated on our spreadsheet. CakeHR has a definite ROI since its all kept electronically and updates with full history view.
  • Asset management was another tool we used Excel. This was a feature we were not shopping but it was like the cherry on top of the cake :-)
  • An easy to use organization chart. We were using PowerPoint before Cake. As we continue to add employees, this makes it clean and easy to update.
