A Users Take on Tricentis Tosca Strengths and Limitations

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

For about two years, my team used Tricentis Tosca primarily for automating both API and front-end tests for our B2B and B2C web shop applications. While it was central to our testing efforts on these platforms, we occasionally faced challenges finding clear solutions in the documentation or getting timely support solely through the community forums.

Pros

  • Easier to use in comparison with coded Automation (e.g. Java + Selenium)
  • Easy to reuse components
  • Handles API tests pretty fast

Cons

  • Documentation - struggled multiple times with features not explained very well, or not explained at all
  • The only support is on Tricentis Forums, where, sometimes, based on 'luck' - you will open a support case, and wait few days until you get the chance to speak with someone from Tricentis and show case your issue

Return on Investment

  • Reduced testing costs
  • Increased automation rates
  • Reduced regression times
  • Faster testing cycles

Tricentis Tosca automation tool helped us get started on our Automation test Journey

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Tricentis Tosca to build our UI automation testing for several different applications. Tosca actually helped us to setup our initial automation from scratch as our company had none and we had to quickly ramp up. Tosca's module based automation as well as quick and easy use helped the team quickly create automated regression test cases which helped our QA testing immensely. We've been able to use Tosca to support many of our company's applications. We've found many different uses of Tosca in our automation from creating test data to end-to-end systems testing as well as selective automated regression of different systems. Without a doubt Tosca has been able to cut our manual testing by helping us increase test coverage through automated regression which releases our manual testers to do more boundary and negative scenarios while repetitive and high level systems flows are taken care of by test automation. We continually add automated cases to our overall regression sets and have built an extensive regression test library. With the module based approach we are able to make quick changes to our automated test cases and thus save time and test effort. Currently we are studying and using the latest AI updates to Tosca which has enable us to automated even those most difficult to automate applications which used to be not automatable due to developers not following good standards using identifiers to fields. All in all I would recommend Tosca over open source due to the excellent support Tricentis provides to it's clients.

Pros

  • Module-based approach makes updates easier
  • Quick ramp up and non coding/scripting technical makes the tool easy to pick up and use
  • New AI functionality helps to add additional support to automating test cases
  • Excellent support

Cons

  • 3rd party integration with tools such as ALM
  • Better BDD support as everyone is going Agile
  • Execution a bit slow and lagging behind open source test execution

Return on Investment

  • reduced testing cycle, quick ramp up
  • increased test coverage
  • scheduled daily and nightly regression
